  14. (TUCSON, AZ - February 18, 1992) - Artisoft, Inc. announced that 
  15. LANtastic v4.1, the latest version of its network operating system, will 
  16. be shipping by the end of the month. This newest version of the award-
  17. winning LANtastic Local Area Network offers increased performance 
  18. as well as additional feature enhancements to its System Manager and 
  19. printing capabilities.

  21. "LANtastic v4.1's increased performance, feature enhancements, and 
  22. price/performance ratio makes it an attractive and competitive solution 
  23. for small- to medium-sized businesses," said Jack Schoof (pronounced 
  24. "shoaf"), Artisoft President and CEO.

  26. Four important features will improve the speed and efficiency of the 
  27. LANtastic Local Area Network - a faster NetBIOS, resource caching, 
  28. random access caching and delayed record-locking. Other new 
  29. features of LANtastic v4.1 include new System Manager features, 
  30. immediate despooling, enhanced printer queue display, new NET 
  31. PRINT switches, new print resources parameters, automatic login to 
  32. servers, login to multiple servers with one command, hot keys to menu 
  33. items, and enhanced NET HELP display.

  35. The NetBIOS in LANtastic v4.1 transfers data between servers and 
  36. workstations faster than any previous version. Because the NetBIOS 
  37. operates in the background without any user interaction, users will 
  38. simply notice a faster accomplishment of their networking tasks.

  40. The new resource caching feature speeds the process of looking up 
  41. and opening files by keeping user access information in a server's 
  42. RAM instead of having to read it each time from the server's disk. This 
  43. allows a server to rapidly read access control list information for each 
  44. network resource from RAM and also reduces the frequency with 
  45. which the server has to check the information before allowing or 
  46. denying a user request. LANtastic v4.1's new random access caching 
  47. quickens access to data on disk by allowing server computers to search 
  48. through files more quickly.

  50. Delayed record locking allows a server to hold onto a user request for 
  51. a record that is already locked and in use by another user. After the 
  52. record becomes unlocked, the user request is completed. Without 
  53. delayed record locking, the user request for a locked record would be 
  54. denied and the attempt would have to be retried until completed, 
  55. degrading response time. With LANtastic v4.1, the user request is 
  56. completed as soon as the record is free.

  58. New System Manager features allow users with the System Manager 
  59. privilege to accomplish a number of network tasks from their own PC, 
  60. including installing an entire network. They can also manage the entire 
  61. network by copying accounts from tne server to another with either a 
  62. command line or menu interface, or set up servers by running the 
  63. batch file on their shared drives. In addition, they can also log users out 
  64. of a server and prevent other users from logging in to a server. This 
  65. makes tasks such as backing up a server much easier because the 
  66. System Manager can log all the network users out of the server, then 
  67. disable logins until the backup is finished.

  69. Immediate despooling allows LANtastic v4.1 users to print faster 
  70. because it begins printing as soon as the print command is given, 
  71. instead of waiting for the print job to be completely spooled onto the 
  72. server's disk. The print job, however, is still stored on the user's disk, 
  73. so if for some reason, the print job isn't completed, the file won't be lost. 
  74. Users can also pause printing, restart the print job or print multiple 
  75. copies. The improved printer queue display tells users when their jobs 
  76. will print, how long it will take and when it will finish.

  78. Four new NET PRINT switches have also been added. The /NOTIFY 
  79. switch sends a print completion message to users at their workstations, 
  80. which is convenient for users that are located in a different room from 
  81. the printer. The /NONOTIFY switch disables this feature.The 
  82. /DIRECT switch lets users with an attached shared printer print their 
  83. own files faster by sending them directly to the printer without first 
  84. copying them to the server's despooling area. The /DELETE switch 
  85. tells the network to delete the file from disk immediately after it is 
  86. printing using the /DIRECT switch.

  88. New print resources parameters grant greater control in printing 
  89. ASCII files and let users specify the number of lines (up to 255) that will 
  90. be printed before a form feed. When combined with LANtastic v4.1's 
  91. other print options, this allows users to format the printing of text-only 
  92. files with great precision.

  94. Automatic login to servers makes it easier and faster for users to access 
  95. a server's resources. After users have logged into a server, they no 
  96. longer have to enter their usernames or passwords to access other 
  97. servers. By allowing users to log in to multiple servers with one 
  98. command, LANtastic v4.1 saves them from having to type multiple NET 
  99. LOGIN commands and allows them to create shorter batch files.

  101. Hot keys have been added as shortcuts to the LANtastic v4.1 menus. 
  102. This allows users to activate an option by pressing the letter key 
  103. corresponding to the highlighted letter in each command.

  105. The NET HELP display now includes instruction regarding 
  106. networking topics as well as specific commands. For example, to see a 
  107. list of expandable strings for use in a macro, the user simply types NET 
  108. HELP MACROS.

  110. Other new LANtastic v4.1 features include NET PAUSE and NET 
  111. FLUSH commands and Change Your Username without Logging Out.

  113. The LANtastic v4.1 upgrade will be available to all registered endusers 
  114. through Artisoft or any Authorized Artisoft Five Star Dealer. The 
  115. upgrade will cost $50 per network for networks using Artisoft adapters. 
  116. Users of the LANtastic/AI(tm) network, the adapter-independent 
  117. version of the LANtastic network which includes software drivers for 
  118. running the LANtastic network on other manufacturers' adapters, will 
  119. be able to upgrade to v4.1 for $99 per network.
